The announcement of the supply of banned cluster munitions to Ukraine is the main mistake at the alliance’s summit, which was held in Lithuania from 11 to 12 July. This was announced by former US diplomat Brett Bruen. According to him, the discussion about Kyiv’s accession to NATO has become the dominant topic at the summit.
“On the eve of Vilnius, two serious communication mistakes were made,” Bruen said in an interview with CNN. He called the first mistake the announcement of the delivery of cluster munitions to Ukraine when other NATO countries do not.
He considered raising the issue of Ukraine’s membership in NATO as the second mistake. According to Bruen, Ukraine’s entry into the alliance was never discussed, but the topic became dominant at the summit.
A senior official of the alliance said that NATO diplomats were disappointed with how the meeting of Western leaders went. “In short, the summit was a success,” he told the American publication.
