Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – Video footage showed Lauren James, the England national team player, intentionally harming her rival in the Nigerian national team, during the two teams’ confrontation in the 2023 Women’s World Cup, which sparked controversy.
At the 84th minute of the match, the Nigerian player fell to the field following contact with her counterpart Lauren James, but the latter deliberately ran over her.
The referee of the match returned to the “VAR” technology to review this case, before the red card was shown in the face of 21-year-old Lauren James.
Lauren James’ teammates defeated Nigeria by penalty kicks, 2/4, following the end of the regular and extra time, in a goalless draw, in the round of 16 of the Women’s World Cup.
