Controversial decisions in PSG vs Newcastle match: Tomasz Kwiatkowski under fire

2023-11-29 13:27:12

The Polish referee Tomasz Kwiatkowski was in charge of VAR (video assistance) on Tuesday evening during the Champions League football match between PSG and Newcastle (1-1). He will not officiate in this same position as initially planned on Wednesday evening during the Real Sociedad – RB Salzburg match. UEFA replaced him with the German Marco Fritz.

He is criticized for his attitude on the Newcastle player’s hand fault Tino Livramento in the 8th minute of added time. The penalty which was awarded by his compatriot Szymon Marciniak to Parisians allowed Kylian Mbappé to extract an unexpected share. The footage clearly shows the ball hitting the Magpie’s hand following first bouncing off his chest.

This decision and the length of added time (8 minutes) would be the origin of Kwiatkowski’s suspension, according to the Spanish daily Mundo Deportivo which revealed the information. Eddie Howethe Newcastle manager, was very categorical following the match: “It was not the right decision in my opinion. There are so many things to consider at this point, speed first and foremost. It was a ricochet that, when slowed down, looks completely different than what happens live. The ball hits his chest first, goes up and hits his hand. But his hand is not in an abnormal position, it (his hand) is next to him, but he is running. I think it’s a bad decision and it’s extremely frustrating.

PSG is 2nd in Group F behind Dortmund, qualified with 10 points. Newcastle and AC Milan follow with 5 points with one day remaining.
