A Coop advertisement in French caused controversy on the eve of August 1. It boasts organic food grown without the slightest phytosanitary product. The message does not appeal to conventional farmers, because organic still allows certain treatments, contrary to what the slogan chosen by Coop suggests.

The retail giant’s advertisement shows apples with the slogan “Do we treat our products? Absolutely not!”. She made the representatives of the agricultural world jump.

Questioned by the RTS, Coop invoked a translation error between the German and French slogan of the advertisement. The large distributor admitted to being aware of the situation and the discontent that the poster aroused. He ensures that the French version of this advertisement will be corrected as soon as possible.

For some, however, the damage is already done. “Conventional” farmers (whose crops are not labeled organic), contacted on Monday, are struggling to be satisfied with this position of the chain of stores. They denounce false . For them, this advertisement reinforces the illusion that it is possible to produce organic products without any treatment.

“Image damage” denounced

Interviewed on the Forum program on Monday, Xavier Moret, a conventional farmer in Martigny and vice-president of the Fruit-Union Suisse association, the association of Swiss fruit producers, expressed deep dissatisfaction with what it characterizes as “image damage”.

“I find it hard to digest the fact that Coop apologizes once the damage is done. She should have been more careful before publication and made a translation that holds up. It’s easy to say following the fact ‘the translation from German to French is not ideal, we will rework it’. For me, the damage is done”, he hammered.

“Pejorated” relationship between organic and non-organic producers?

Could this misinformation be likely to strain relations between organic and non-organic producers? “Currently, we get along well. But they might be worse if we came, on our side, to say clearly that there are also a lot of treatments” on the side of organic farming, warns Xavier Moret. According to him, this year, organic crops have undergone 30% more treatments compared to conventional crops, “certainly with different products and active ingredients”.

“We might denounce the cause to ‘Faire Werbung’, a Swiss commission for loyalty in terms of . It would also be good for the Coop to make a press release, but it will not do it”, already regrets the farmer. He calls for a denial or an explanatory note in which the large distributor would explain how organic fruit is produced.

Organic has “nothing to gain” from such

The president of Bio Valais told him that the branch had nothing to gain with such , flattering at first sight. “This is not at all the reality that we live on a daily basis. You might think that organic is like the little house on the prairie and that you just have to let it grow without doing anything. Which is totally false and serves our cause”, he denounces.

For his part, the vice-director of the Swiss Peasants’ Union (USP) Francis Egger also had very little taste for this publicity. He specifies that the USP has been in discussion for several months with the main players in the retail sector to encourage them to introduce real self-regulation in terms of , without which the USP might intervene at the political level.
