Guest on the show Les Puncheurs on RTL on Sunday, Raoul Hedebouw made comments that were ambiguous to say the least regarding wearing the veil at school. “I don’t have a problem with that from 8 or 9 years old,” he himself clarified during the sequence. Contacted by us, the president of the PTB denounces the “confusion” which is made in the question. “To be clear, I was answering the question regarding the abaya at school. I am once morest wearing the full veil.”

Martin Buxant’s question initially concerned the wearing of the abaya at school, a traditional Islamic outfit which was banned in establishments in France following a decision by Gabriel Attal, the Minister of Education. A ban deplored by Jean-Luc Mélenchon, president of France Insoumise.
“I have no problem with that from 8 or 9 years old,” replies the president of the PTB. “The choice can be private”, he adds, also recognizing “that he does not want it” because he is “ once morest community withdrawal”.
Raoul Hedebouw’s comments sparked numerous reactions on social networks. Several political leaders also expressed their indignation.
“We can therefore, in 2023, claim to be Marxist and find it normal for 8-year-old girls to wear the veil. Communitarianism definitely wins everything. Even revolutionary values and the fight once morest alienation. The sinking of the PTB is total,” deplores François De Smet, the president of DéFi.

“The PTB is therefore for wearing the full veil (Abaya) from the age of 8 or 9 at school. There are no more limits to the collective delirium among Belgian communists,” says David Clarinval, Deputy Prime Minister MR.

“A marriage between religious thought and totalitarian political thought. The PTB is a threat to democracy and the Enlightenment,” reacts Zuhal Demir, Flemish N-VA minister. “Islamo-leftism is a dangerous cocktail for our society,” adds Darya Safai, N-VA MP.

Hedebouw: “The question was confusing”
Contacted by us, Raoul Hedebouw specifies that he contests the ban on the abaya at school in France but that he does not question the ban on the full veil in Belgium.
If it is true that Martin Buxant’s question mixes abaya and full veil (prohibited in public spaces, editor’s note), two different garments, the president of the PTB did not take up his interlocutor either to distinguish between these two Islamic outfits. “Full veil” will however be mentioned four times in the sequence.
“The question was confusing enough to say no more than that. The process is more than limited,” replies the Marxist. “I understand that journalists want to import the French debate into Belgium. I am clearly being asked a question regarding the abaya and the French debate. I am focused on a 20-minute program with lots of questions asked regarding Mélenchon’s positioning. There is no possible ambiguity”.
Why did he specify “from 8 to 9 years” then? Hedebouw will not give us a clear answer, returning once more to the “confusion question”. “There was confusion on my part too, the interview was tight. There was confusion in the question regarding the abaya. The very mixture was made by the journalist.”
“Personally, from an activist point of view, I am not for that. I am leading the fight once morest community withdrawal. It’s an important fight,” he adds.
The sequence can be seen in full on RTL Play
