Police in Michigan (United States) have come under fire for a blatant mistake by officers in Lansing when they mistook a 12-year-old boy for a car thief.

The events occurred last Thursday in Waverly Park. The boy, named Tashawn, left his house to take out the trash. It was then that the officers handcuffed him and put him in the police car. His father, Bernard, left his house very angry to explain to the agents that his son had not committed any crime.

“I was angry. I ran out and asked the policeman what was wrong and why he had my son handcuffed,” he told CBS. He was concerned when he saw that his son did not return home following throwing out the garbage.

According to the police explanation, the minor resembled the car thief they were looking for. The family is seeking a legal response to denounce the situation experienced by the minor.

“Community relations are a priority for us as a department. Our hope is that we can put this unfortunate case behind us and continue to represent the community we serve,” the department said in a statement.
