Controlling Tiger Mosquito Infestation in Centre-Val-de-Loire: Mapping and Prevention Strategies

2023-07-25 11:44:36

You have probably seen it more and more often in recent years: the tiger mosquito continues to establish itself in Centre-Val-de-Loire. The Regional Health Agency (ARS) reported in 2022 30 towns colonized in the region; it indicates this Tuesday, July 25 that nine new municipalities are also in the process of obtaining this status, due to the proliferation of the insect. More than a quarter of the population in Centre-Val-de-Loire now lives in an area where the tiger mosquito is established, again according to the ARS.

Mapping of colonized areas

On its website, the ARS offers a map of colonized areas, regularly updated. These include the municipalities of Châteauroux, Bourges, Déols, Saint-Doulchard, Villedieu-sur-Indre, Montierchaume, Ardentes, or Poinçonnet.

Limit the proliferation of the tiger mosquito

To limit the proliferation of this mosquito, which originates from the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, as much as possible, the Regional Health Agency in Centre-Val-de-Loire calls for the removal in our environment of places or objects containing water, because it is in this water that the tiger mosquito reproduces by laying its eggs there. If it is not possible to remove these storages, the ARS advises, for example, to install a mosquito net on the rainwater tanks, to put sand in the cups of the plants, or to clean out its gutters.

The Regional Health Agency also recalls that this mosquito moves little: it travels less than 150 meters throughout its life. Which means in theory that it is possible to control its proliferation by avoiding providing it with water stocks, large or small.
