Controlling Begging in Namur: New Order Restricts Begging near Shopping Malls

Since July 7, begging has been more controlled, framed in Namur. The mayor, Maxime Prévot, issued an order to this effect. It is now forbidden to beg over a distance of 20 meters on either side of the shopping malls (Wérenne, Saint Joseph and Harscamp) as well as inside them. “For a period of four months throughout the territory of the City of Namur, namely from July 7 to November 7”says the order.

This decision was made due to the recent disturbances to public order generated by some people. “For several months, there has been an increase in incidents involving one or more beggars on the municipal territory and particularly around shopping malls. Complaints and claims have been addressed to both the mayor and the commander by citizens, merchants or users.” To support his remarks, the mayor chose an example: “On July 3, 2023, a team was obliged to intervene in the Wérenne gallery as part of a gathering of six people consuming alcohol and whose behavior was disturbing and noisy. In their report, the peacekeepers specified that the gallery in question is not reassuring for the citizens.”
