CHICAGO — William Contreras Contreras hit a tiebreaking two-run single in a three-run eighth inning and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Chicago Cubs 3-1 on Saturday for the first win of the season.
Brandon Woodruff pitched six strong innings for Milwaukee and Devin Williams pitched a tough ninth for the win. The Brewers lost 4-0 Thursday to the Cubs on the opening day of the season.
Dansby Swanson had another three hits for Chicago and Ian Happ homered. Justin Steele struck out eight in six innings.
The Cubs led 1-0 before the Brewers came around in the eighth on a cold and windy followingnoon at Wrigley Field.
Brian Anderson led off with a single off Javier Assad (0-1). Garrett Mitchell attempted a sacrifice to Anderson before reaching on a walk. Jesse Winker, who arrived in a December trade from Seattle, followed with an RBI single to center.
For the Brewers, Venezuelans Willy Adames 3-0, William Contreras 4-1, with two RBIs.
For the Cubs, Puerto Rican Edwin Ríos 2-0.
