The impact of diet on cardiovascular health is considerable: 30% of deaths due to these diseases are attributable to diet. This alarming statistic underscores the vital role nutrition plays in our overall health, particularly when it comes to preventing heart disease and stroke. In recent years, the Nutri-Score system has emerged as an essential tool for consumers aiming to make healthier food choices.

Understanding Nutri-Score

Since its introduction in 2017, the Nutri-Score provides consumers with a visual guide to evaluate the nutritional quality of food products. The scoring system utilizes a color-coded scale ranging from “A” (dark green, indicating high nutritional quality) to “E” (dark orange, indicating low nutritional quality). This system encourages consumers to choose options that are less sweet, less fatty, and less salty, ultimately promoting healthier eating habits.

The effectiveness of the Nutri-Score in informing dietary choices is well-established, supported by over 140 international scientific publications. Many studies have concluded that the Nutri-Score is a valid tool for characterizing the nutritional quality of foods and positively influencing consumer choices.

A Reduction in the Risk of Heart Attack and Stroke

French researchers have been examining the updated version of the Nutri-Score, which is set to be adopted by 2024. The revised scoring system aims to better reflect the nutritional value of beverages, considering the impact of sweeteners and other additives. For instance, diet sodas containing artificial sweeteners will now receive a lower score (C-E), preventing manufacturers from misusing additives to improve their product ratings.

In a study published on September 11 in the Lancet Regional Health-Europe, scientists analyzed data from over 345,000 participants in the EPIC (European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition) cohort. Out of these participants, more than 16,000 developed cardiovascular disease, including 6,565 myocardial infarctions and 6,245 strokes.

The findings are striking: individuals consuming more foods with lower Nutri-Scores exhibited a heightened risk of cardiovascular disease, particularly heart attacks and strokes. Mélanie Deschasaux-Tanguy, a research officer at Inserm, emphasized that “these results confirm the relevance of the Nutri-Score as a public health tool to guide consumers in their food choices with a view to preventing chronic diseases.”

Please note: Despite its proven effectiveness, the Nutri-Score remains optional and depends on the voluntary participation of agri-food companies.
