NEW YORK, 6th July, 2023 (WAM) — The Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict, Virginia Gamba, has expressed the concern of the international organization over the continued violations of children’s rights in areas of conflict, and called for providing them with the necessary protection.
This statement was made as part of the annual report that Ms. Gamba presented to the Security Council meeting on Wednesday and which covers five geographical regions and 26 situations.
Gamba said that in 2022 there were 27,800 verified violations once morest 18,890 children, including 8,630 children killed or maimed, 7,622 children recruited and used, and 3,985 children abducted. Rape and sexual violence once morest children, including gang rapes, forced marriages and sexual slavery – although not reported – have also been verified, while children have been killed or injured in airstrikes. Some cases were so serious that they resulted in the death of the victims.
The UN official referred to the use of schools and hospitals for military purposes and the attack on aid workers during conflicts, practices that remain a source of great concern for the international organization.
Omar Abdi, Deputy Executive Director of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), pointed out that the greatest number of grave violations once morest children have been verified in protracted conflicts, where millions of children have been displaced by the fighting and where hundreds of children have been killed or injured.
“Due to the recent escalation, we expect verified violations in at least some of these situations to increase over the coming months,” he warned.
