Continued Russian Ship Attacks in the Black Sea: Updates on Alleged Death of Russian Commander – Ukrainian Navy Reports

Russian ships in the Black Sea continue to launch attacks following the alleged death of a top commander, according to the Ukrainian Navy

Russian ships continued to launch attacks once morest Ukraine following the alleged death of the commander of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, but these attacks are launched “out of inertia,” Dmytro Pletenchuk, spokesman for the Ukrainian Navy, said on national television on Monday.

Pletenchuk was asked regarding comments made by Ukrainian authorities early Monday that Admiral Viktor Sokolov, as well as 33 other officers and more than 100 military personnel, had been killed in Friday’s attack on Sevastopol.

Pletenchuk stated that the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, “does not control the actual operation of ships at sea” and trusts his admirals, who know “their means and forces, the personnel, how to manage them, how to best deploy them. And also “They can hide things from (Putin), not report on certain issues.”

He went on to say: “Right now, they (the Russian Navy) lost the person who actually manages all this, and his staff, who manages the fleet with him. This is a large grouping that requires a large number of managers who direct all the processes so that (the fleet) works as a single mechanism. Let’s imagine that the core of this mechanism stops working.”

Pletenchuk went on to say that “yes, last night they (referring to Russian ships in the Black Sea) were still launching inertial attacks,” but compared the operations to “a chicken running around without a head.”

“Therefore, from now on, they (the Russian Navy) will have their respective problems with troop control,” he said.

Earlier on Monday, Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces said Sokolov was killed in Sevastopol on Friday, in perhaps the most audacious attack by Ukrainian forces in Crimea yet.

“The commander of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, Admiral Sokolov, was eliminated during an attack on the headquarters in Sevastopol,” said Colonel Vladislav Nazarov, spokesman for the Southern Operational Command.

CNN cannot independently confirm Ukraine’s claims regarding Sokolov and the other casualties in Sevastopol. CNN has contacted the Russian Defense Ministry for comment but has not received a response at the time of writing.
