Consuming food supplements has become extremely common and is accompanied by a trust willingly placed by some consumers in the composition of the products, their method of manufacture or the type of packaging. Others are rightly wary, because behind the green facades, pollutants and chemicals are always present. – Part 2

To finish with the subject of packaging, let’s take stock of a phenomenon that is growing: the use of plastic containers.biodegradable and compostable “. There are several biosourced plastics considered (or even labeled) “compostable”. The most commonly used is polylactic acid, or PLA (polylactic acid), made from corn starch. Besides the fact that we are right to ask ourselves the question of using food resources to make plastic, it is important to understand that the term compostable does not mean that by throwing it into nature or into your compost, the packaging will disappear harmlessly in a few months.

The term “compostable” means that it can be converted in six months into at least 90% CO2 in the presence of microorganisms, and that it contains harmless additives at a maximum of 1% of its initial mass… However, the conditions (humidity, temperature, types of microorganisms, etc.) of industrial composting are never found in a natural environment, not even in an individual’s garden compost. Thrown in the open air, it will take at least eighty years for PLA to degrade, which gives time for a bag, for example, to end up in the ocean, suffocating a sea turtle. Furthermore, when it is used to make objects (and when it degrades), PLA generates a lot of nanoparticles that can penetrate the body and have harmful effects.

State of recycling

Today, only 25 to 30% of plastic packaging is recycled, which means that 70% will be burned, buried or lost, ending up in the ocean or nature. No plastic is infinitely recyclable: at the end of the day, it will always remain unusable waste. Banking on recycling to say that we can consume plastic without problem if we think regarding sorting it is therefore an illusion. The only real solution to having a real impact on plastic pollution is to avoid consuming it as much as possible. (food and non-food packaging, unnecessary objects, etc.).

And in food supplements and cosmetics?

The container is one thing, the content is another. Even though many companies pride themselves on offering natural products, their capsules and bottles often contain additives from synthetic chemistry, or natural, but not necessarily harmless. Let’s take a look at some of the substances found in your food supplements or cosmetics (as well as the names by which you can identify their presence in the list of ingredients).

Ethoxylated and propoxylated compounds: their manufacturing process by ethoxylation requires the use of an extremely toxic, carcinogenic, mutagenic and very reactive gas: ethylene oxide. Very polluting process and poorly biodegradable compounds. … Why is this article reserved for subscribers?
