Many corn snacks contaminated with mold toxins

The consumer magazine Eco-Test took a closer look at 19 different corn snacks and sent them to the laboratory. The bitter result: mold toxins were found in 10 products. Find out below which products are involved and which other defects were found.

Two mold toxins were found directly, once deoxynivalenol (DON) and zearalenone (ZEA). And in “greatly increased” amounts. DON, also known as deoxynivalenol, belongs to the group of trichothecenes. These toxic compounds can attack the digestive tract and nervous system.Snack Monster Bio Pufuletti (insufficient) : Here, too, the DON value was increased. T-2/HT-2 toxins were also found. This mold toxin is classified as irritating to the skin, stimulating nausea and necrotizing, among other things. Gusto Paw Patrol Salted Snacks (Insufficient): The mold toxin ochratoxin A (OTA), which is considered to be potentially mutagenic and carcinogenic, is particularly critical here.

In addition to the found mold toxins, contamination with mineral oil was also found in some products. Too high amounts of salt also led to point deductions in the test.

These corn snacks are among the Öko-Test test winners

Four products received the best rating and are therefore recommended. Only small traces of mold toxins were detected in these products. When consumed in moderation, these amounts are safe for children.
