Contactless payment will evolve: here is what will change

NFC, the standard that allows payments by telephone, is about to undergo some modifications over the next few years, which will completely change the way of thinking about remote payment. It will now be possible to pay truly contactless.

The NFC Forum, the body responsible for regulating the standard of the same name, presented its roadmap for 2028. Several changes are planned.

Among these novelties, a modification of the scope of the devices is surely the one that will be talked about the most. If until now, you had to put your smartphone within 5mm of the payment terminal, even if it meant touching it to your phone, it will now be possible to make real contactless payments. Even if, of course, it will still be necessary to keep a certain proximity with the device, since with this new range, the data transfer could still only be done within three centimeters, instead of five millimeters previously .

The change in the NFC standard should also concern the amount of information that could be transmitted by the devices. This should make it possible to make several payments in a single use of contactless.

Finally, with this new standard, it will also be possible to transform any telephone equipped with an NFC chip into a payment terminal, strictly speaking, which would allow you not only to transmit payment data, but also to receive them. .

But NFC technology is not limited to payments, since it is a system allowing the transfer of any type of information, but also to recharge contactless devices. And on this point too, the NFC Forum intends to change things.

Thus, it is the intensity of the recharges that should be increased, allowing a more powerful charging of devices than before. Nothing spectacular, however, insofar as the load will remain limited to a maximum of 3 watts, which is much less than with most other wireless charging standards.

As already said above, this is a roadmap until 2028. This does not mean that it will be necessary to wait so long before seeing all these functionalities in operation. While some will indeed not be available for several years, others are already very close to being made operational. It will therefore be necessary to see on a case-by-case basis for the launch date of each of these technologies.
