Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky had their first communication since the start of the war in Ukraine in February 2023.
During a phone call, Xi told Zelensky that negotiations are the only solution to the war, Chinese state television reported. The Chinese president also said that China will send a representative to Ukraine.
The talks between the two leaders underscore Beijing’s efforts to launch itself as a neutral mediator, Bloomberg reports, recalling that it recently presented a 12-point peace proposal that was considered vague and quickly rejected by Kiev’s allies, who saw it as a deal that would benefit the Kremlin.
