With the rain and gray weather in recent weeks, the consumption of seasonal fruits and vegetables has dropped in France, leading to lower prices. Apricots, tomatoes, melons, peaches, plums… According to FranceAgriMer, fruit and vegetable prices have fallen by 20 to 29% compared to last year.
“Because of the weather, people don’t want to eat seasonal products”
9.90 euros per kilo of cherries, 3.99 per kilo of peaches or even two melons for five euros… On this Parisian market, it is impossible to miss the major fruit and vegetable labels on display. Recently, the prices of summer must-haves have been reduced in an attempt to attract customers. “Before, watermelons were at five, or even six euros per kilo. It has dropped to four euros per kilo. The same for cucumbers – 1.50 euros today once morest 2.50 euros before – and tomatoes which have dropped”, explains Fouad, seller on the stand.
Due to the rainy weather, the demand for seasonal fruits and vegetables has collapsed. Coupled with declining purchasing power, turnover has fallen by at least 30% compared to July 2022 for this trader. “Because of the weather, people don’t want to eat seasonal products. This is the first year when we sell a lot less,” he continues.
With these price cuts, Fouad hopes to see sales pick up once more, even if for Antoine, 33, prices remain high. “I have the impression that seasonal fruits are very expensive at the moment. In any case, it strikes me more this year,” he says. While waiting for the return of the sun, and of customers, the stand has also reduced orders from its suppliers.
