Greenwashing? Switzerland at the forefront! Image: Bing + Photoshop AI.
The German-speaking consumer protection association Konsumenschutz has filed not only a complaint once morest Swisscom, but also ten others once morest Swiss companies for greenwashing. These approaches are aimed at statements on the climate of these sometimes very important companies.
According to communiqué of Konsumenschutz, not only Swisscom, but also Avis, Coca-Cola Switzerland, Eliteflights, Hipp, Kübler and even Zoo Zürich are accused of misleading claims, either of greenwashing, as developed on Wikipedia. It must be said that some messages sometimes seem very questionable, reading the same text.
Questionable claims
“More and more products and services carry ‘green’ claims. For example, cell phone subscriptions are supposed to be “climate neutral“, fuel oil “CO2 neutral“or even ‘climate-positive’ children’s porridge,” according to the same press release released earlier this week.
Consumer protection therefore lodged eleven complaints of two different natures once morest claims by eight companies. Eight procedures were initiated on the basis of the law once morest unfair competition (LCD) with SECO and three complaints were filed with the Swiss Commission for Loyalty (CSL) for unfair .
Resolute action by the authorities
According this documentation, Swisscom’s discourse should be put into perspective because the effectiveness of carbon offsets is controversial. The association believes that “many offset projects do not change much in the actual concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere. An effective reduction of CO2 emissions is prevented by a lack of sustainability, relocations, rebound effects or double counting”.
It is for this reason that the Konsumenschutz demands resolute action from the respective bodies in all cases. My comment? If I share the questions of this association, it must be recognized that Swisscom and other operators or Internet access providers are making many efforts to buy or produce green electricity, not to mention the many measures (profitable, etc.) to reduce the power consumption.
In any case, these consumer initiatives are to be welcomed given the current confusion around sustainability and the various CO2 compensation projects…
