In 2018, the Consumer Council tested 35 types of general honey and 10 types of Manuka honey. As a result, 13 products were found to contain antibiotic residues or pesticides. Two of the honeys contained a variety of antibiotics, which can affect the male reproductive system. Including “Xilai Hero” Natural Bee Honey containing 8 kinds of antibiotics and “Damiakou” natural honey containing carcinogens, related products have been discontinued earlier.

Another nine types of honey were found to contain adulterated sugar, one of which was Manuka honey that sold for more than NT$1,000. The Consumer Council stated that according to CODEX standards, honey should not be mixed with other sugar (foreign sugar adulteration) or substances. It also said that Hong Kong laws only stipulate that the sucrose content in honey should not exceed 5%, which is obviously behind international standards. It urged the government to establish Example of monitoring the adulteration of honey.

“The price of honey may not be directly related to the quality. Sometimes consumers buy cheap honey, which is not necessarily bad. Consumers are advised to pay attention to the product description and ingredient list.” A spokesman for the Consumer Council
