Construction prices have continued to rise this year, but below inflation

Compared to the first quarter of 2023, construction prices rose by two percent in the first three months of this year; compared to the previous quarter, the increase was 1.2 percent. To put this in perspective: In April, general inflation rose by 3.5 percent year-on-year, in March it was 4.1, and before that it was 4.3 percent.

The construction price index for building construction rose to 136.9 points in the first quarter of 2024, 2.5 percent above the level of the previous year’s quarter and 1.9 percent above the previous quarter. In building construction, the increased prices for construction services such as natural and artificial stone work, coatings on wood, metal, masonry, plaster, concrete, lightweight panels as well as electrical installations and gas and water installations contributed to the price increases.

This year, civil engineering prices rose to 104.1 index points in the first quarter, up one percent compared to the same quarter last year and 0.2 percent compared to the previous quarter, Statistics Austria announced on Friday.
