Hladík said this in a debate on Czech Television (CT) on Sunday. “We need all four blocks, the discussion is now just regarding when,” said the minister. According to him, the government wants to decide by the end of June how many nuclear power plants will ultimately be built. Until recently there was only talk of a new block in Dukovany.
Necessity “is obvious”
According to Hladík, it is obvious that the Czech Republic will need four new reactors in the future. The time frame in which it will be necessary to build it is being discussed. The providers’ offers would determine how many blocks the government awards in the current tender.
According to Hladík, the decisive factor in the selection will be that the reactor blocks ensure long-term low electricity prices and energy security. If it turns out that it is advantageous to commission all four reactors at the same time, the government will decide that way, said Hladík.
At the end of January, the government asked France’s EDF and South Korea’s KHNP, which remained in the running for the giant contract, to submit binding offers for the construction of up to four new reactors in Dukovany and Temelín. Both companies have until the end of April to do this. The government should then announce the winner in the summer and also the number of reactors it wants to build, it was said.
