Asuncion, IP Agency.- The Ministry of Public Works reports that the Paraguayan naval sector is experiencing a significant boost with the construction of the cargo ship “Don Toyo,” a project that will not only strengthen the country’s merchant fleet, but will also generate a significant impact on local employment.
The “Don Toyo”, which will become the largest ship built in the region by a Paraguayan shipyard, will have a capacity of 906 containers and dimensions of 119.8 meters in length, 30 meters in width and 5.5 meters in depth and a machine propelled by 3000 HP of power.
This September marks one year since the keel-laying of the ship, which was attended by the President of the Republic, Santiago Peña, the Minister of Public Works, Eng. Claudia Centurión, the Minister of Industry and Commerce, Javier Giménez, and other authorities.
It is estimated that up to 300 people could be employed during the construction process at all stages, making it an important source of work for the local workforce.
Furthermore, once construction is completed, the vessel will generate additional jobs for Paraguayan seafarers, thus expanding employment opportunities in the sector.
The head of the General Directorate of Merchant Marine, Patricio Ortega, visited the facilities of the Aguapé Shipyard, where the ship is being built, which is around 70% complete overall.
During his tour, Ortega stressed that this ship is not just a boat, but represents much more because there will be people working as carpenters, plumbers, electricians and all of them are Paraguayan. He said that international classifiers, local engineering companies, iron specialists, engineers, architects and workers will also participate.
Naval engineer Daniela Muñoz explained that currently around 100 people are carrying out the work daily, which implies a considerable logistical deployment in terms of construction, movements and loading. She also highlighted the participation of local subcontractors and suppliers in various areas of the project.
It is important to highlight that this project will contribute significantly to the growth of the Paraguayan merchant fleet in general, allowing our country to improve its competitiveness in the operations of the Paraguay-Paraná Waterway and consolidating Paraguay’s position as a key player in river transport in the region.
