Construction of New Breakwater to Resolve Silting Issue in Blankenberge Marina: Boosting Tourism and Ensuring Port Channel Efficiency

A new breakwater will be built in place of the Westerstaketsel located west of Blankenberge from October 2, the Flemish Maritime and Coastal Services Agency (MDK) announced on Monday. This project, costing 18.6 million euros, aims to resolve the recurring problem of silting up in the city’s marina, a direct result of annual storms.

In a first phase, the concrete boom will be destroyed, starting with the offshore end, which will involve the complete closure of this structure. A portion of the beach will also be reserved for site installations and material storage. The debris from the dismantling will largely be reused for the new construction. Temporary maritime signage is also planned.

The new structure, a 600 meter long dike, should help prevent the port channel from silting up while providing a new space for visitors, which will strengthen the city’s tourist appeal, according to the Flemish Minister of Public Works, Lydia Peeters (Open VLD).

The work is expected to last until spring 2026, with a break during the months of July and August so as not to hinder beach attendance in high season.
