“Construction Disaster in Quaregnon: Homes Affected by Bentonite Mudslide”

2023-04-26 11:57:00

Imagine for a moment that the floor of your kitchen rises 60 cm and that a mudslide invades your home… This is what happened this Monday in Quaregnon. In question ? A project led by the Intermunicipal IDEA.

Monday, at the end of the morning, Éveline hears suspicious noises. She then goes upstairs to check the roof. Coming back to the ground floor, it’s horror: the kitchen floor has completely risen. “The mud poured out. I had to flee that way because there was at least 15 cm of mud moving at full speed towards the first room. The only room where I was able to find refuge”testifies the inhabitant of Quaregnon.

The house is now uninhabitable. Éveline is hosted by her son. She tells us that she has not been feeling well since this incident. “I would always be scared, I think. I would always be scared if it happened once more. Given that apparently the works will continue… I think it will always be a worry. I was fine here.. .”she continues.

A total of 4 homes are affected. In question ? A construction site located a hundred meters from the houses. The objective is to replace high-voltage cables that supply wastewater treatment plants. To do this, the teams inject a product under pressure at a depth of 12 meters. That was the problem. “It is the injected product, which we call bentonite, which is a clay of a fairly liquid nature which is brought up by the various old lost sewer networks and which is brought up through 3 gardens and in the kitchen of a dwelling”explains Emilie Zimbili, IDEA communication manager.

The Intermunicipal IDEA secures and cleans the whole house. She also urgently sent a file to the insurance. Construction has been completely halted until further notice. Time to perform analyses.
