Trustworthy, sincere and warm. These are the first three words that come to Vibeke Gamst’s mind when she has to describe her party chairman Søren Pape, who died on Saturday at the age of just 52.
– It was a shock for me to hear regarding Søren’s death. It is far too early and therefore also terrible for Søren’s family, says Vibeke Gamst, who is 2nd deputy mayor and group leader of the Conservatives in Aalborg City Council.
Vibeke Gamst also sits on the regional council for North Jutland, where she chairs the Social and Psychiatry Committee.
– He was a person you might trust. Well-balanced, outgoing, but also shy. I would call him a man of honour, says Vibeke Gamst regarding her now deceased chairman.
Before he became chairman of the Conservatives at national level, he was a well-liked mayor in Viborg Municipality.
– But typically for him, he was ready for the challenge when he was invited to become national chairman of our party. As he said at the time: You would have to be a piece of shit if you didn’t accept the invitation, says Vibeke Gamst.
But Søren Pape also had respect for people when he met a fellow party member with a point of view that did not quite harmonize with his own.
– Most recently at the National Council, he and I disagreed regarding who should be our leading candidate for the EU Parliament. But he kept a sober tone in the debate with me, among others, says a shocked city council and regional council politician.
She also has a great deal of pity for her now deceased chairman on top of the hard time Søren Pape had to go through with the revelations of his then husband’s dishonesty regarding his past.
– After all, there were terrible things that came to light, and it must have been hard for him, but he also took that in stride. And he kept his spirit despite the adversity, says Vibeke Gamst.
