The European Copernicus Institute is formal. The record for the hottest month ever recorded was broken in July 2023. The consequences observed are reduced physical abilities and slowed productivity.
The effects of the heat wave are felt on all continents. July 2023 is the hottest month on record on Earth, and extreme heat is having health and economic consequences. The American authorities estimate that they would lose 100 billion dollars each year. An insurer quantified the global impact of the July heat wave: -0.6 points of growth. For France, this would give -0.1 point of GDP, or all the wealth produced in one year. “As soon as we have three or four days of heat wave, it’s almost a tenth of GDP. We work less and less well, we move sites, we make mistakes”explains Ludovic Subra, chief economist of the Allianz group.
Plummeting productivity
The head is spinning, the ideas are blurred. Productivity would drop by 40% above 32°C, and 66% at 38°C. We must therefore adapt, shift working hours, improve insulation so that the economy continues to operate during the heat waves which are expected to increase. “We know that global warming will continue in the decades to come, potentially stabilizing at the end of the 21st century depending on the choices we have made in terms of greenhouse gas emissions”says Françoise Vimeux, climatologist at the Research Institute for Development.
