Baierbrunn (ots) –
Traffic accidents, sports injuries, falls at home: the causes of a traumatic brain injury are different. About 90 percent of injuries treated in the emergency room are classified as minor, while only ten percent are classified as moderate or severe.
Nevertheless, writes the health magazine “Apotheken Umschau”, those affected can suffer from consequential damage, some of which are serious. “A significant proportion of those affected with a mild traumatic brain injury also suffer from consequential damage,” says neurosurgeon Prof. Dr. Eckhard Rickels from the ZNS – Hannelore Kohl Foundation, which recently published a study on this topic with the Barmer Institute for Health Systems Research.
Accordingly, those affected by a traumatic brain injury were more likely to suffer from certain illnesses ten years following the event than people without such an injury. For example, epilepsy and problems with mental performance occurred almost twice as often as in the control group. Dementia was around 1.7 times more common. The more treatment-intensive the trauma, the more often the illnesses occurred.
The problem: “After an inpatient stay and rehab, those affected often fall into a hole. Especially when they are alone,” says Rickels. If you then notice problems and are unable to cope well with everyday life, your first point of contact should be your family doctor’s office and a neurologist. They then transfer money to the appropriate authorities. Physiotherapy helps with movement restrictions, and speech therapy with language problems. Occupational therapists help you to cope independently in everyday life once more.
Individual advice and practical help for those affected and their relatives is also available from the ZNS – Hannelore Kohl Foundation at www.au.de/!1020613 (https://www.hannelore-kohl-stiftung.de/hilfe/beratungsteam/). There are also addresses for rehabilitation clinics and for followingcare. The Society for Neuropsychology offers a list of certified neuropsychologists. V (https://www.gnp.de/behandlerliste) .
