The current president of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the Guinea-Bissau head of state, Umaro Sissoco Embalo, said Sunday in Ouagadougou that a consensus on the duration of the transition was found with the authorities of the Burkinabè transition.

“We had very good discussions with the Burkinabè authorities. We made assessments on how the progress of the commitments that have been made since the conference of heads of state and governments”, declared Embalo at the end of his meeting with the President of Burkina Faso, Lieutenant Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba.

The Bissau-Guinean President stressed that the Burkinabè authorities have also shown what their vision is and what the transitional government must focus on.

“We saw that the deadlines are very important and there too, we had a consensus on the 24-month deadline from July 1, 2022 until July 1, 2024”, he explained.

For Embalo, the most important axes of the transition are the security challenge, humanitarian issues, the return to constitutional order, the mobilization of resources and the establishment of monitoring and evaluation mechanisms.

The ECOWAS delegation, which also includes the mediator and former president of Niger, Mahamadou Issoufou, hailed the transitional government for the “progress made” on the ground in the fight once morest terrorism.

“I think that all of us must mobilize alongside the Burkinabè government, because Burkina Faso is a founding member of ECOWAS, and despite this situation we must accompany it and mobilize behind the transitional government”, argued the current president of ECOWAS.

Following the July 3 summit in Accra, Ghana, economic and financial sanctions once morest Burkina Faso were lifted, but the country remains suspended from ECOWAS authorities.

On January 24, Burkinabè soldiers overthrew former President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré, describing his handling of the security situation as catastrophic.
