The 13th stage is only 134 kilometers long, but the peloton will have to tackle three difficult climbs: the Col de l’Aubisque, the Col de Spandelles and the Col du Tourmalet, where the finish line is found following a climb of more than 18 kilometers, at more than 2,100 meters above sea level.
After Thursday’s stage, Evenepoel did not want to reveal how he planned to approach the terrible Tourmalet climb. “I’m not going to say it, because every day I see a man from Jumbo-Visma listening behind you,” he smiled to journalists.
Before the Vuelta, Evenepoel trained on the route for the 13th stage. “I did a good reconnaissance. The start will probably be hectic: it starts uphill, then it’s a very long descent. It may be that the race is still completely open following 40 kilometers, that there is no no escape yet.”
Evenepoel, third in the ranking 1:09 behind leader Sepp Kuss, is impatiently awaiting the stage. “This is a stage where the legs will make the difference. It promises to be a super spectacular stage.”
