Conquer Polio: Climbing like Ibrahim to End Polio Now

2023-06-27 20:00:00

A flagship action. “Climbing like Ibrahim” is the name of this international operation. Ibrahim, a young boy, caught polio, and for him, just going to school seemed physically as difficult as climbing mountains. His childhood friends, Mini and Rachid, then started a collection to raise funds to help people affected by this disease, reduce contamination due to contagion, and definitively defeat polio, an achievable goal… with means.

Amélie Perfetti has been living in Droyes for over a year. She comes from Tours and joined the Bragarde section of Rotary where she is responsible for communication. The only walker in the department for this special operation, she has an energy to move mountains, which she already put to the test last year in Queyras where a march took place to defend this same cause.

As a reminder, other actions had made it possible to raise funds, such as the ascent of Mont-Blanc, Kilimanjaro, the GR 20 in Corsica or the Inca Route in Peru, publicized adventures to publicize this humanitarian action. , and allow people who so wish to show their solidarity.

This year, the time is for innovation with the crossing of the Pyrenees, from Hendaye to Banyuls, for more than 30 walkers who will take turns to complete the 900 km circuit, in teams of five to eight people, from July 1 to August 23. They will face difficulties to their measure: trail running, walking… Aurélie will take part in this adventure from July 23 to 29.

Rotary, values

The preservation of health is one of the values defended by the international Rotary movement which, more broadly, works to improve living conditions in the world (drinking water, hygiene, access to healthcare and education, etc.) , promote peace, develop local economies, protect the environment. One of the actions at the global level of this structure, “End polio now”, aims, by raising funds at the global level, to develop vaccination once morest polio.

Not a fatality

Poliomyelitis virus infection is not inevitable. The proof is that all countries in the world have eradicated it through systematic vaccination – France since 1988 – while maintaining compulsory protection by the vaccine. All, except Afghanistan and Pakistan, which do not have the financial means to offer a dose (a single drop of vaccine in the mouth costs €0.50 per person, and one is immune for life ). Several international organizations are fighting, such as the WHO, UNICEF, with their means, so that these two countries join the international community, and that, like smallpox, polio, as it is called, disappears from the planet. Not to mention that, by contagion, new cases, however extremely rare, are declared in the world, coming from these two countries. Most nations participate financially to varying degrees by allocating budgets to contribute to the fight. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation joins the collection by multiplying by three the amount of each donation.
