“I can’t get over it”: Conner Rousseau’s explanations do not go over with the political class
What penalties?
As a criminal lawyer, Nathalie Gallant gave her opinion on the policy pursued in matters of justice by Minister Van Quickenborne. “There are reforms that are justified, in particular the strengthening of certain penalties, such as domestic violence, violence once morest the police, etc. Certain offenses which no longer exist today have been removed from the penal code. But the real problem is that we also tell you that the aim pursued by this penal code is in reality to reserve prison as a last resort and therefore to propose an arsenal of measures in order to allow the judge to opt for something other than prison. And that, excuse me, is total hypocrisy. At the same time, Mr. Van Quickenborne advocates carrying out more and more small sentences.”
Prison overcrowding
There is a desire on the part of the government to carry out more and more sentences. But according to Nathalie Gallant, this position is contradictory, with the government citing the feasibility of these measures with the creation of new prisons, but which are not yet there. “Right now, we don’t have the new prisons. In Brussels, there is the Haren prison which was presented to us as a panacea. But the reality is that it is not at all a panacea. The prison is certainly very large, it can hold quite a few prisoners but there is a small detail that kills: there is not enough prison staff to accommodate the number of prisoners.”
A big trial to come
Very soon the trial in the Sky ECC case will take place. This is an encrypted messaging system used by drug traffickers. A total of 129 defendants will be present. Nathalie Gallant represents one of his defendants. “At one point, we will get the upper hand on this type of crime and I must say that on this point the judicial authorities are doing everything they can.”
