Conner Rousseau: The Young Political Phenomenon Shaping the Future of Flanders

2023-11-17 18:44:42

He is one of the most popular personalities in Flanders. This young man, from Saint-Nicolas, has ambition to spare and has experienced a meteoric political rise in just a few years.

He was elected Flemish deputy in May 2019, then became group leader. In November of the same year, at the age of 26, he had a triumphant election at the head of the sp.a, since renamed Vooruit. He becomes the youngest party president in the country and then promises new methods. “We clearly saw at the sp.a that the experience of the last 15 years had not been conclusive and therefore we must focus on renewal“.

This new political phenomenon is taking hold of a party that is losing momentum but which it intends to bring back to the forefront. The man masters communication, juggling social networks. He brings together hundreds of thousands of people on his YouTube channel and his Instagram account where he calls himself “Kingconnah”, or King Connah.

In September 2020, Conner Rousseau was entrusted with a government pre-formation mission by the king.

Raised in Saint-Nicolas, in Flanders, he is the son of the former mayor of Saint-Nicolas, senator sp.a Christel Geerts and a French-speaking father. A lawyer by training from the University of Ghent, Conner Rousseau also served as communications advisor to former minister Freya Van den Bossche (sp.a) and the former president of the sp.a, John Crombez.
