The Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) has officially announced the release of the Matter 1.0 specification and the opening of the Matter certification program. As part of the launch of the new protocol, authorized testing laboratories are open for product certification. In addition, testing tools are available, while the open source reference design software development kit (SDK) is complete.
With this launch, member companies have at their disposal a complete program to bring to market the next generation of interoperable products that work across brands and platforms with greater privacy, security and simplicity for consumers.
Additionally, alliance members with devices already deployed and with plans to upgrade their products to support Matter can do so now, once their products are certified.
The Matter 1.0 standard launches with comprehensive test cases and test tools for CSA members, as well as a global certification program that includes eight authorized test labs that are prepared to test not only Matter, but network technologies as well. underlying Matter: wifi and Thread.
Underlying network technologies
Wi-Fi technology enables Matter devices to interact over a high-bandwidth local network and makes it easy for smart home devices to communicate with the cloud. For its part, Thread provides a highly reliable and energy efficient mesh network within the home. Both the Wi-Fi Alliance and the Thread Group partnered with the Connectivity Standards Alliance to help realize Matter’s full vision.
To ensure users connect authentic, certified and up-to-date devices to their homes and networks, Matter is breaking new ground with security policies and processes that use distributed ledger technology and public key infrastructure to validate the certification and provenance of the devices.
Running over ethernet, wifi, and Thread, and using bluetooth low energy for device startup, this initial version of Matter will support a variety of common products for smart homeincluding lighting and electrical, HVAC controls, shades and blinds, security and safety sensors, door locks, media devicesincluding TVs, controllers such as devices, and apps.
