A new step has just been reached in the “sneltram” project. As a reminder, the Flemish Region plans to build a tram line along the A12 to connect Brussels to Willebroek in the Antwerp region via Londerzeel, Wolvertem and Meise.
At the start of the school year, the Flemish Minister of Mobility, Lydia Peeters, announces that she has submitted a planning permit to redevelop the A12 intersection with the Kerkhofstraat in Londerzeel, a real black spot on the route.
Revolt of Flemish municipalities once morest the tram project planned between Willebroek and Brussels: paying 17 million, “absolutely no agreement”
The current intersection, regulated by a traffic light and often congested, will be replaced by a multi-level entrance and exit complex. The A12 will no longer be cut. Local traffic will benefit from a bridge over the A12. The tram will pass on its own site in a tunnel. A bridge will also be built for pedestrians and cyclists.
Tram planned between Brussels and Willebroek in the Antwerp region: faced with the revolt of the municipalities, Flanders will finally put its hand in its wallet
Work is expected to begin in 2025. With this tram, it will be possible to connect Willebroek to Brussels-North in 40 minutes. However, the Brussels route has not yet been defined. Two options are on the table: via Bockstael and Tour&Taxis, or via the Jette cemetery and Belgica. The inauguration of the line is planned for 2028 according to the current schedule.
