Connecting Binche: Expanding Bicycle Path Network for Easy Access to City Center and Surrounding Villages

Several weeks ago, when work on the Chaussée Brunehault cycle path was regarding to end, bulldozers from the Wanty company continued to work on a new cycle path. This time, in the extension of the N55, from the UNESCO roundregarding to the Château de la Hutte, rue Saint-Pie.

While the work, piloted by the Walloon Region for a budget of 500,000 euros, is coming to an end, the objective of the municipal authorities’ plan is to connect the different villages of the entity with the city center. “That is indeed the objective of PIWACY”, we were told at the City of Binche. “Bicycle lanes make the city center more accessible to more people. The aim is to encourage citizens to use their bikes. It is a more economical and ecological mode of transport. People who use bicycles for their daily commute can realize significant savings on car-related costs, including gas, parking and maintenance.”

Not to mention the health and environmental benefits. “Let’s not forget that cycling is a form of physical exercise beneficial to health. Bike paths encourage residents to exercise regularly. Fewer cars on the road also means fewer greenhouse gas emissions and air pollutants. Cycle paths thus promote better air quality, which has positive impacts on public health.”

Boulevards

These are veritable boulevards that have been created between the Unesco roundregarding and the Château de la Hutte, along the fields by the company Wanty, whose headquarters are located just next door. “The chemin de la Hutte which connects rue Saint-Pie to the Athénée Royal will also be redone in collaboration between the City and the SPW, therefore not within the framework of this contract. As for the other side of the path, which leads to Ressaix, the file is registered in the PIC 2022/24 and still requires the acquisition of land rights (file in progress at the Régie Foncière), to give an extra width to the current path , and meet the criteria for cycle mobility.”

In the near future, it will therefore be possible to travel from a village to the center of Binche in complete safety. “The objective is to manage to develop an even wider network of cycle paths to connect the old towns to the city center and thus allow a connection with neighboring towns.”

The work, highly dependent on the weather, will be completed soon without the City being able to give us a precise deadline.
