Connected glasses to read ebooks? An idea that arouses both fascination and skepticism. These innovative glasses promise an immersive and convenient reading experience, allowing users to enjoy their favorite ebooks on the go. While some see this technology as a real breakthrough in the field of reading, others consider it a far-fetched idea. Let’s break it all down in detail.
The Sol Reader: a unique approach to immersive entertainment
The Sol Reader was quietly shown off at CES 2023 earlier this year. Only a few people have been able to try this unique material. He seems to be the opposite of portable devices such as the Meta Quest 3 or the Apple Vision Pro.
This product looks like a oversized pair of glasses, but they are equipped with two 1.3-inch backlit E Ink displays. Each screen displays 65,536 pixels and blocks all forward vision.
A different display quality
Compared to Apple’s Vision Pro which has around 23 million pixels, the Sol Reader does not offer beautifully anti-aliased text. Also, it does not offer the font of your choice.
Instead, e-books and text files will be displayed similar to an 80s PC. It is not yet clear how the Sol Reader handles e-books with images. However, this may not be very aesthetic.
Technical characteristics of the Sol Reader
The Sol Reader is powered by a 240 MHz dual-core processor with 8 MB of RAM. Although storage is limited to 64 MB, the glasses connect wirelessly to an iOS or Android mobile app.
This allows you to copy DRM-free EPUB files. So you don’t need to store your entire collection on the Sol Reader. Browsing through e-books is done using a ergonomic wireless remote control.
Glasses weigh only 104 gramsrechargeable battery included, and offer approx. 25 hours of reading. They should therefore be very comfortable to wear for long periods of time. However, it’s hard to say how long users’ eyes will be comfortable reading jagged, anti-aliased text.
The price of the Sol Reader
Despite its attractive price of 350 $, it will still be difficult for many users to justify, even if they are dedicated readers. It’s even more expensive than high-end e-readers like Amazon’s $300 Kindle Oasis.
The Kindle Oasis offers a sharpness of 300 PPI. Plus, it’s more expensive than full-color VR headsets like the Meta Quest 2. In fact, the Meta Quest 2 recently went up to $299.
Sol Reader Limited Availability
All of these concerns might be irrelevant. These connected glasses for reading ebooks are available for pre-order. However, you must enter a special code to book it. If you don’t have this code, you will have to join a waiting list and be patient for a little longer.
