“Unacceptable”: Conmebol’s position following the clashes in Uruguay 0-1 Colombia

Conmebol reported this Thursday, July 11 that decided to open a file “to clarify the sequence of events and the responsibilities of those involved” in the brawl between Uruguayan players and Colombian fans that occurred in the stands of Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte (North Carolina) following the Copa America semi-final.
“In light of the acts of violence that occurred at the end of the match between the Uruguay and Colombia national teams, The CONMEBOL Disciplinary Unit has decided to open a file to clarify the sequence of events and the responsibilities of those involved.“the agency reported.

“On the eve of the final of our Copa America, we want to confirm and warn that no action will be tolerated that tarnishes a global football celebration, in which the protagonists and the fans who will be present in the stadium for a final watched by hundreds of millions of spectators around the world are involved,” said CONMEBOL.
“It is unacceptable that an event such as the one that occurred on this occasion, “turn passion into violence. Therefore, any attitude that violates sporting competition and the most beautiful show in the world that belongs to the whole family will not be tolerated,” he concluded.
Battle royale in Charlotte
Several Uruguayan players, including Darwin Núñez, Ronald Araújo and José María Giménez, jumped into the stands to fight with Colombian fans following the Copa América semi-final match between Uruguay and Colombia on Wednesday.
When the referee blew the final whistle, there was a scuffle between players from both teams in the centre circle, which quickly spread to the stands between fans from both countries.
The most surprising thing happened when several players, led by Núñez, jumped into the stands to get involved in the fight between the fans while objects and liquids rained down on them.
Nunez, fists raised in a fighting stance, was punched in the face by one of the fans.
The brawl lasted several minutes while police efforts were in vain to separate those involved.
