Conmebol announced on Thursday, July 11, that it decided to open an investigation “to determine the sequence of events and the responsibilities of those involved” in the brawl between Uruguayan players and Colombian fans that occurred in the stands of Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte (North Carolina) following the Copa America semi-final on Wednesday, July 10.

In light of the acts of violence that occurred at the end of the match between the Uruguay and Colombian national teams, the Disciplinary Unit of CONMEBOL has decided to open a file to clarify the sequence of events and the responsibilities of those involved,” the organization reported.

After Colombia’s 1-0 victory over Uruguay, Uruguayan players Darwin Núñez, Ronald Araújo and José María Giménez jumped into the stands and fought with some Colombian fans who, according to the Celeste, had been aggressive towards their families.

“On the eve of the final of our Copa América, we want to confirm and warn that no action will be tolerated that tarnishes a global football celebration, in which the protagonists and the fans who will be present in the stadium for a final watched by hundreds of millions of spectators around the world are involved,” said Conmebol.

“It is unacceptable that an event such as the one that occurred on this occasion should turn passion into violence. Therefore, any attitude that violates the sporting competition and the most beautiful spectacle in the world that belongs to the entire family will not be tolerated,” he concluded.
