Kolkata: With the possibility of a Trishanku cabinet in Mizoram, the Congress has started talks with the regional organization Soram People’s Movement (ZPM). According to various exit polls, no one may get an absolute majority in Mizoram.

The newly formed Soram People’s Movement fielded candidates as independents in the last election. SDP emerged as the main opposition, relegating the Congress to the third position. Lalduhoma, a former IPS officer who was in charge of Indira Gandhi’s security and a former Congress state president, is the chief ministerial candidate of the ZPM. The Congress is led by state Congress president Lal Sawta, who has been a two-time finance minister.

After the 2016 Assam assembly elections, the Congress was kicked out of the North-Eastern states in a few years. With the loss of Mizoram in 2018, the downfall of Congress was complete. Rahul Gandhi and others announced that the comeback in the region will be through the Mizoram elections. The Congress feels that it will be difficult to maintain the party without power in the region where it depends on central funds etc. Therefore, the party has decided to participate in the administration even though it is a coalition party.

The exit poll results show that the Congress, which was far behind at the beginning of the election campaign, will gain ground. With Rahul Gandhi’s visit, the Congress has made a big step forward in its campaign. The campaign strategy was prepared by a team including Maharashtra Professional Congress president and Malayali Mathew Antony. AICC’s media communication coordinator, Mathew Anthony, camped in the state for two months and coordinated the campaigns. Earlier, Mathew was in charge of media during the Meghalaya elections as well.

Mathew Antony said that the Congress will do well. Election campaigning in Mizoram is different from other parts of the country. Even door-to-door campaigns are banned. He said that the Congress campaigned differently among the educated people. The party ran various campaigns such as a QR code campaign with Rahul’s picture, a post card appeal to one lakh people. AICC General Secretary Bhaktacharan Das, AICC Training Officer Sachin Rao and others supervised the election campaign.

One of the reasons why the Congress suffered a setback in the 2018 Mizoram assembly elections was the lifting of prohibition on liquor. Even senior leaders failed to please the Christian congregations. The party, which had won 34 seats, fell to 5 seats. The Mizo National Front, which had only 6 MLAs, came to power by winning 26 assembly constituencies. This time, the Congress faced the election by maintaining an equal distance with the Christian churches.
