New Delhi ∙ Former Union Minister Milind Deva joined the Shiv Sena in a blow to the Congress on the threshold of the Lok Sabha elections. The exchange was on the day Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Nyaya Yatra began in Manipur. Political observers say that the party is facing a challenge as Congress leaders continue their habit of looking for opportunities just before the elections.

The Congress, which is trying to consolidate the unity of the opposition parties through the ‘India’ front in view of the general elections, is in a position to ensure that its own leaders do not fall. Deva took to social media to end the 55-year Congress relationship while joining the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena.

Milind Deva is the latest member of the ‘Rahul Gandhi team’ to join various parties from the Congress. Since 2019, 9 prominent leaders have left the Congress, including Jyotiraditya Scindia.

Milind Deva

Milind is the son of former Union Minister late Murali Devra. Milind’s move comes amid the possibility that the Uddhav faction of the Shiv Sena, an ally of the Shiv Sena, will capture the South Mumbai Lok Sabha seat, which has been held by the Congress and the Deva family for more than 5 decades. Milind was a Union Minister in the UPA government.

Hardik Patel

Hardik Patel, leader of the Patel faction in Gujarat and former working president of the Congress, has ended his relationship with the Congress in May 2022. A month later, he joined the BJP. Hardik, who emerged in state politics through the Patel community agitation, joined the Congress before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Hardik’s resignation came following strongly criticizing the Congress leaders who are not interested in the problems of the people and are focusing on giving chicken sandwiches to the leaders coming from Delhi and receiving messages on their mobile phones.

Ashwini Kumar

In 2022, former Union Minister Ashwini Kumar quit the Congress ahead of the Punjab assembly elections. Patiyarakam alleged that the party member for 46 years was trying to silence him.

Ashwani Kumar, who had been a member of the UPA cabinet since 2009, had to resign on 10 May 2013 due to allegations of falsification in the CBI report on the coal field and a court reference. Ashwani Kumar was one of Sonia Gandhi’s confidants.

When 23 senior leaders sent a letter demanding correction in the party, he was one of the leaders who strongly criticized him. He was a member of the Rajya Sabha from 2002 to 2016. He is also reputed to be one of the youngest Additional Solicitor Generals in the country.

Sunil Jhakar

Former Punjab Congress president Sunil Jhakar will leave the party in 2022. Jhakar was suspended by the Congress for 2 years for making a public statement once morest former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi. He is leaving the party following this action. Sunil, the son of prominent Congress leader Balram Jhakar, former Lok Sabha Speaker, is now in the BJP.

R.P.N. Singh

Right before the assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh in 2022, prominent leader R.P.N. Singh left the Congress and joined the BJP. Singh, who is also a former Union Minister, left the party alleging that following Priyanka Gandhi took over the election campaign of the Congress, she was marginalized.

Jyotiraditya Scindia

Jyotiraditya Scindia, the son of Madhavrao Scindia, who was a prominent Congress leader, became a leading youth leader. In July 2020, he overthrew the Kamal Nath-led Congress government in Madhya Pradesh and joined the BJP with his followers. This also helped the BJP to consolidate its rule in Madhya Pradesh. Now he is the Union Minister.

Jitin Prasada

AICC General Secretary and former Union Minister Jitin Prasada was a leading member of the G23 group who wrote to Sonia Gandhi with the intention of repairing the Congress. He is the son of former Union Minister Jitendra Prasad. Prasada, who is known to be close to Rahul Gandhi, joined the BJP just months before the June 2021 UP assembly elections.

Alpesh Thakur

Alpesh, who was a Congress MLA from Radhanpur in Gujarat, will join the BJP in 2019. Although he lost to the Congress in the by-elections held following this, he won on a BJP ticket from Gandhinagar South in the elections held last year.

Anil Anthony

At a time when the Congress is intensifying its attack on the BJP in national politics, senior leader A.K. Antony’s son Anil Antony left the Congress. Anil explains that the decision to join the BJP was ‘difficult but there was a way to do something constructive’. Anil joined the BJP in January last year.
