Congo Airways: Bemba deplores the lack of progress in the revival of the company

Despite his warning about the situation of the national airline “Congo Airways SA”, the VPM, Minister of Transport, Communication Channels and Disenclavement, Jean-Pierre Bemba Gombo, noted during the tenth meeting of the Council of Ministers that his questioning “has not seen any progress”. In this regard, new instructions were given to the Minister of Portfolio, Jean-Lucien Bussa Tongba, for an urgent unblocking of this file.

In accordance with the instruction of the President of the Republic during the 111th meeting of the Council of Ministers on September 15, 2023, Jean-Pierre Bemba Gombo recalled the urgency and the need for the government to finance the implementation of the emergency plan to relaunch the activities of Congo Airways.

In his information note presented at the 3rd meeting of the Council of Ministers, Jean-Pierre Bemba Gombo indicated that this national company only operated with an aircraft obtained by leasing, a rental contract or contractual agreement which provides that the user pays the owner for the use of an asset.

“Since the funds needed to enable this national company to strengthen its operational capacity have not yet been released, Congo Airways only operates one aircraft on lease, the contract of which expires in the coming days. In addition, it risks losing its air operator certificate and its IATA approval if, by September 16, it does not have an operational aircraft registered in the Democratic Republic of Congo,” indicated the minutes of this meeting.

Following this interpellation, the government adopted the file relating to the proposal for the renewal of the Congo Airways SA fleet. In his report presented at the 6th meeting of the Council of Ministers, held on Friday, July 19, 2024, Jean-Pierre Bemba Gombo recalled a series of measures envisaged to ensure the revival of the national company.

“The VPM, Minister of Transport, Communication Routes and Disenclavement, briefly presented the business plan spread over a period of 5 years, which provides for the acquisition by lease/purchase of 3 A320 aircraft, which would make it possible to resolve the dual issue relating to the loss of the CTA air transport certificate and IATA approval by the deadline of September 16, 2024,” reported the minutes of this meeting.

Jean-Pierre Bemba Gombo justified the revival of the national airline in light of the positive indicators presented by the company, currently operating only one aircraft under lease, the contract of which expires soon.
