Could the monster traffic jams that occurred in Montreal last weekend be avoided, or at least have less of an impact if more importance were given to public transit?

This is what Vivre en Ville’s director of public and governmental affairs, Samuel Pagé-Plouffe, believes.

“Since the start of the pandemic, we have been wondering whether public transit is still a good idea, given that transit companies have deficits because they lack traffic,” he explains. -he. I think we have to go back to those basic principles. Yes, if we add alternatives, we will improve the situation.”

He adds that the money invested in the creation of new roads should rather be used to maintain existing ones.

“We continue to invest to develop new highways and new roads in Quebec when we already have a road system that is much larger than when we compare, for example, with Ontario and elsewhere, he continues. The situation will not improve if we do not make it a priority to invest 100% of our resources in the maintenance of road infrastructures.

The beginning of the weekend was once again complicated for several motorists interviewed by TVA Nouvelles due to obstacles on major arteries.

“This morning it was going well, but the return trip takes me twice as long,” says a driver.

“It’s really complicated, too exaggerated and there are a lot of holes in the ground, it’s really catastrophic,” adds a man.

“As we say here, it’s the on tuesday, launches another driver. It’s still the same, I’ve been here for 14 years and it’s still shit.”

However, according to the spokesperson for the Ministère des Transports du Québec (MTQ), Gilles Payer, the work must be done on weekends to avoid larger traffic jams during the week.

“The work has to be done,” he said. We do them in the summer, and we do them on the weekends and at night, because that’s when we have the time.”

“If we do this during the week and during the day, it causes a lot more nuisance, adds the publicist. We also have festivals that we try to avoid, fireworks and the Formula 1 Grand Prix.
