Today, Saturday, there were conflicting reports regarding the situation in the strategic city of Lysichansk in eastern Ukraine.
On Saturday, Ukraine issued a clarification on the situation around the city in response to an assertion by separatist fighters.
Ukraine’s military said the city was “not besieged”, contradicting what separatist fighters had said.
In a statement, a spokesman for the Ukrainian National Guard, Ruslan Mozychuk, stated that “violent battles are taking place in the vicinity of Lyschansk. Fortunately the city is not besieged and is under the control of the Ukrainian army.”
This statement contradicts what was previously announced by a representative of the separatist forces in Lugansk. A representative of the separatist forces was quoted by the Russian “TASS” news agency as saying that “Lisechansk is completely besieged.”
The city has witnessed violent battles since days.
Lysichansk is strategically important because it is the last major city in Luhansk, one of the two Donbass industrial districts, still under Ukrainian control.
