Armenia has asked the European Union to help it accommodate people who fled the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh, the press service of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said.

In a few days, more than 100,000 inhabitants of Nagorno Karabakh, an enclave located in Azerbaijan mainly populated by Armenians, fled to Armenia. Yerevan is asking the European Union to provide temporary shelter and medical equipment. Aid workers say many refugees are starving and there is a shortage of medicine. The UN plans to send a mission to Nagorno Karabakh this weekend to assess humanitarian needs.

The self-proclaimed separatist republic of Nagorno Karabakh, where Azerbaijan led a lightning offensive last week, was almost entirely deserted by its inhabitants on Saturday with more than 100,000 refugees arriving in Armenia, according to Nazeli Baghdassarian, the spokesperson for the Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian.

According to official figures, around 120,000 Armenians lived in the enclave before its dramatic dissolution was announced earlier in the week and Azerbaijan’s calls to stay appear to have had no effect.
