This Monday it was confirmed three new cases of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) H5 detected in marine mammals in Claromecó and San Blas, in Buenos Aires, and in the Rio Negro locality of San Antonio Este. This was reported by the National Agrifood Health and Quality Service (Senasa).

The Senasa National Laboratory diagnosed new samples positive for the disease, which were taken in sea lions that were found dead in the two towns of Buenos Aires and in Río Negro.

The first positive case of the disease was detected in Rio Grande, province of Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica and South Atlantic Islands. The others were in the Punta Bermeja Protected Natural Area, Rio Negro; in Necochea, Buenos Aires and Punta Loyola, Santa Cruz, in Mar del Plata, Buenos Aires and Puerto Pirámides, Chubut, and all three today.

The findings were made within the framework of surveillance actions and sanitary measures that are carried out throughout the national territory for the prevention of the disease, established by the emergency declaration by HPAI-Senasa Resolution 147/2023.

Within the sampling protocol, together with local authorities the place for the burial of the suspected dead animals is identified to avoid any type of contamination or contagion from other animals or people.

From Senasa they clarified that the detections in marine mammals do not affect the zoosanitary status self-declared before the World Organization for Animal Health (WHO), where Argentina is recognized as a country free of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in poultry.

Recommendations once morest bird flu

Senasa recommends Do not handle dead animals or animals with suspicious symptoms. Likewise, producers, institutions and the general public are reminded of the importance of notifying if high mortality of susceptible species, nervous, digestive and/or respiratory signs are identified in wild birds or commercial or backyard domestic birds.

It is also recommended not to visit poultry farms or wild animal settlements following having been in contact with dead animals or those that have presented symptoms.
