Conference “The metaverse: a parallel world to discover”

2023-09-08 14:00:48

The Thetford Public Library Network will present Jean-François Lalonde’s conference entitled “The metaverse: a parallel world to discover” on Tuesday, September 19, at 7 p.m.

The metaverse is a virtual, immersive and persistent world, which allows the virtualization of human activities. This means that it will be possible to work, play, visit new places and communicate with other people completely virtually.

The rapid progression of these technologies and the many recent media announcements, however, raise many questions: where is the current technology and what is it possible to do with these virtual universes? Will reality catch up with fiction and will we one day see a parallel virtual world like the Oasis from “Ready Player One”?

This conference aims to demystify what the metaverse is, from its origins to its current form. In particular, it will discuss the technologies used to create an immersive virtual universe that makes it possible to replicate the real world in a hyper-realistic way. It will also be possible to dream a little regarding the future and discuss its potential promises and perils. And, who knows, maybe we’ll go there too?

A few words regarding the speaker

Jean-François Lalonde, Ph.D., is a full professor in the department of electrical engineering and computer engineering at Laval University and deputy scientific director at the Intelligence and Data Institute (IID). Before starting his teaching career in 2013, he was a postdoctoral researcher at Disney Research. He received his doctorate in robotics from Carnegie Mellon University (Pittsburgh, USA) in 2011.

His research interests lie at the intersection between computer vision, computer graphics, and machine learning. He is particularly interested in how physical models can be combined with data-driven methods to better interpret, visualize, and synthesize the visual world. His work has been disseminated through 70 scientific articles which have accumulated nearly 4,500 citations.

He is actively involved in transferring his research results to industry, as demonstrated by his eight patents, his collaborations with companies such as Adobe and Meta, and his involvement as a scientific consultant for several high-tech companies.

Users can obtain tickets by going to the circulation desk of the Cégep library. Please note that a limit of two tickets per member has been set.
