Aug 6, 2023 | The students of the first semester of the new medicine career at the Nucleus Nueva Esparta of the Universidad de Oriente, as part of the Development of Learning Skills subject, led by Prof. Ysabel Velásquez, coordinated and developed the II Discussion : “Skills and Competences for the practice of medicine in the current context”, a conference developed for the entire university community, especially students from the School of Health Sciences, ECS, where Nursing students also participate.
The conference, installed by Prof. Mayra Narváez, director of the ECS, included the participation of renowned doctors affiliated with different public and private healthcare centers in the insular region, as well as Udone teachers, who spoke precisely regarding the exercise of this discipline, its challenges and social projection, among them; Eurilis Rojas, Hanoy Yánez, Eugenia Farías and Mauribel Figueroa.
The Forensic Dalila Díaz, from the National Service of Medicines and Forensic Sciences, presented to the attendees the entire panorama of this fascinating specialty, while the lawyer Carlos Villarroel, made a substantial explanation regarding legal medicine, the dignity and rights of the patient or the deceased. Finally, Dr. José Antonio Narváez, Pdte. of the physician’s union in the entity, offered a whole historical tour of medicine in Nueva Esparta.
Of course, the participation of the high school graduates during the rounds of questions was not lacking, complementing the expertise of the forum members with the concerns and expectations of the students.
Prof. Velásquez left it for granted that from her subject, these activities will continue to further enrich the formal curriculum, with the experience of specialists who have been a long way in the field of health.
