INNOVATION carried out by Pertamina in implementing 100% bioethanol (E100) as a transportation fuel is considered as a sign of the seriousness of the BUMN in developing new renewable energy (EBT).
“Yes, according to Pertamina’s roadmap in developing new renewable energy. The use of bioethanol is a way for the achievement of this new renewable energy to continue to advance. This is also proof of Pertamina’s seriousness in the energy transition,” said clean energy observer Abadi Poernomo in Jakarta, Monday (29/7).
At the 2024 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) in BSD Tangerang, Banten, Pertamina showcased its latest innovation, namely 100% bioethanol (E100) made from sorghum.
According to Abadi, bioethanol innovation is one of the efforts to continue developing EBT, especially since the achievement of new renewable energy to date is around 13-14 percent of the target of 23% after 2025. “That is why the use of bioethanol is being encouraged,” he also said.
In this regard, Abadi hopes that Pertamina will gradually continue to increase the implementation of bioethanol from the current 5% (E5) in Pertamax Green, to at least 20%, because this mixture is considered significant for reducing exhaust emissions.

Meanwhile, regarding Pertamina’s collaboration with Toyota at GIIAS 2024, E100 bioethanol is used as an alternative fuel in Toyota’s Flex Fuel Vehicle (FFV), according to him, it is very positive. “The most advanced, especially using 100% Bioethanol,” he said.
Abadi added that vehicle engines designed to use bioethanol are indeed widely made in Jakarta, including those that use 100% bioethanol and are widely exported to Brazil.
He expressed his confidence that Pertamina could mass produce 100% bioethanol, especially with the support of Ethanol producers, which currently only number around 13 factories, as well as regulatory improvements, so that the price of bioethanol would be economical.

Vice President of Corporate Communication of PT Pertamina (Persero) Fadjar Djoko Santoso added that Pertamina as a leader in sustainable energy transition encourages the use of Bioethanol as transportation fuel.
In addition to presenting the latest innovation, namely Bioethanol 100% (E100), the company is also gradually implementing bioethanol in Indonesia. The implementation starts from Pertamax Green 95 with a bioethanol content of 5% (E5). (Ant/N-2)
