West Bank: The decision to expand the settlement of Eli draws condemnation from the White House

The United States said it was deeply disturbed by the Israeli government’s decision to approve the construction of 5,700 housing units for settlers in the occupied West Bank.

A US State Department spokesman said that would be an obstacle to a two-state solution.

Violence between Palestinians and Israelis has flared sharply since Benjamin Netanyahu’s re-election as prime minister in an ultra-nationalist religious government that has vowed to expand its presence in the Palestinian territories.

The settlements are illegal under international law.

And the French news agency reported that the United States decided to stop funding scientific research with Israeli academic institutions in the West Bank, in order to perpetuate Washington’s policy that seeks a two-state solution.
