Members of the Russian Foreign and Defense Policy Council issued a statement on July 13 condemning the idea that is spreading in Moscow.
“To hope that a limited nuclear conflict can be managed and prevent it from escalating into a global nuclear war is the height of irresponsibility”, write the members of the Council for Foreign and Defense Policy of the Russian Federation. “This means that what is at stake is the destruction of tens, if not hundreds of millions of people in Russia, Europe, China, the United States and other countries. It is a direct threat to humanity in general.”they worry in a press release relayed by the Russian opposition media Medusa.
The signatories of this declaration, who speak on their behalf and not on that of the Council, condemn the idea which is spreading in Russia of striking Europe with nuclear weapons, in particular since the publication of an article in June 2023 , by one of the founders of the Foreign and Defense Policy Council, Sergei Karaganov, entitled “A difficult but necessary decision. The use of nuclear weapons can save humanity from a global catastrophe”.
“Pseudo-theoretical reasoning”
The author explained, among other things, that Russia, to win in Ukraine, had to launch a “preventive nuclear strike on Europe” in order to “breaking the will of the West”. According to the political scientist, such a strike would not lead to a global nuclear war, since the United States would not defend Europe.
Such “pseudo-theoretical reasoning” et “emotional statements” are unacceptable, as they create moods in Russian society which may lead to “to make catastrophic decisions”, condemn the signatories in their press release.
“We, the members of the Council for Foreign and Defense Policy, consider these proposals absolutely unacceptable and unequivocally condemn them. No one should ever blackmail humanity with the threat of using nuclear weapons and, moreover, give command of their use in combat”they conclude.
